Is Technology Taking Control of Our Minds? Awareness Workshop Highlights the Risks of "Brain Rot"

A psychosocial awareness session entitled "Brain Rot (A Crisis of Awareness)" was conducted by Abeer Sharaf, Social Worker at the Psychological Support and Legal Counseling Center for Women, with the aim of raising awareness about the impact of excessive digital content consumption on mental well-being and cognitive functioning.

The session began with an introduction to the concept of brain rot, exploring both its linguistic meaning and its behavioral manifestations in everyday life. Through an interactive brainstorming exercise, participants reflected on several thought-provoking questions, including: Are we controlling technology, or is technology controlling us? and How does digital content steal our creativity and reduce our ability to concentrate?

Sharaf also discussed the primary factors contributing to brain rot and highlighted its cognitive and psychological consequences, including memory impairment, frequent forgetfulness, emotional numbness, mental sluggishness, difficulty concentrating, and physical exhaustion.

As part of the interactive activities, participants completed a brief self-assessment to evaluate their own level of exposure to brain rot. Based on the results, they were classified into three categories: Safe, Warning, and High Risk. The findings were discussed collectively, allowing participants to reflect on their digital habits and identify practical steps to restore awareness and minimize the negative effects of this growing phenomenon.

At the conclusion of the session, participants received brochures entitled "Ten Smart Habits to Protect Your Brain from Brain Rot," providing practical strategies for maintaining cognitive health and adopting healthier digital habits.

Closing the session, Sharaf emphasized that brain rot is not merely a humorous term circulating on digital platforms, but a genuine warning sign that threatens family relationships, mental well-being, and cognitive abilities. She stressed the importance of fostering mindful technology use and developing healthy digital behaviors to protect mental health and preserve critical thinking in an increasingly connected world.
